Travelling without rushing on Thuringian Ilmtal-Radweg**** across Weimarer Land
A sustainable bike tour offer
Spend a relaxing and enjoyable cycling holiday on the “Ilmtal-Radweg”, Thuringia’s 4-star cycle path. Start at the Rennsteig, where the Ilm has its source. Cycle steadily down the valley and experience the diverse and balanced mix of nature and culture. Look forward to the history of famous personalities, urban world culture and individual free spirits. Experience charming towns and endearing villages, gardens and parks, castles and palaces as well as farm shops and orchards. The often freely accessible spots along the Ilm tempt you with wonderfully shady places, especially in summer.
The enjoyment of regional products, the intensive experience of the surroundings and environment and the use of resource-saving means of transport make your cycle tour a sustainable experience. When selecting accommodation, we also rely on locals who consciously focus on the responsible use of resources and thus make an important contribution to maintaining the economy in the regions.
9 days 8 nights including breakfast and luggage transfer
Source studies or in Goethe’s footsteps – Today you have the choice. Option 1: Explore the Ilm’s source area near Allzunah by bike. Use the Rennsteig shuttle (but ATTENTION: this only runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays!!!) or cycle the Ilm valley cycle path in the opposite direction. You will climb approx. 270 metres in altitude over approx. 15 km, which is no problem for sporty cyclists and e-bike riders. On the return tour, you cycle down the valley through the Thüringer Wald biosphere reserve in complete harmony with nature. Option 2: Take a hike up the 861 metre high local mountain, the Kickelhahn, with fantastic views over the UNESCO Thüringer Wald biosphere reserve. Pay a visit to the Goethehäuschen while you’re there. On the wooden wall of this small refuge, the poet wrote his famous face “Above all peaks is peace” in 1780. You will spend the night in Ilmenau.
Along the Ilm to Bad Berka (approx. 50 km): Follow the Ilmtal-Radweg at a leisurely pace. Near Stadtilm you will come across the Oberilm salt towers, wooden witnesses to the important salt production in the region. The cultural enjoyment also slowly picks up speed. Visit the art and mustard mill in Kleinhettstedt, for example. The imposing half-timbered building from the 16th century is a feast for the eyes and tasting the extensive range of mustard is a real treat for the palate. The route continues into Weimarer Land, through the 2-castle town of Kranichfeld to Tannroda, a unique castle complex with a keep and the cosy GastRaum Heinrich (Friday-Sunday). Here you can enjoy regional game specialities or vegetarian and vegan dishes with seasonal ingredients. Once you arrive in the spa town of Bad Berka, you can end the day with a relaxing stroll in the spa gardens or a refreshing dip in the Kneipp pool at the Goethebrunnen. Be sure to try the typical Thuringian sheet cake at Café Zeit. The changing menu ranges from homemade cakes and tarts, seasonal soups and quiche to coffee from a private roasting house in the region. You spend the night in Bad Berka.
The day of contrasts – origin and world heritage (approx. 20 km): On today’s relaxed stage, the Ilmtal-Radweg runs through the picturesque Ilmtalaue and along imposing rock caves near Buchfart. A covered wooden bridge, one of the oldest of its kind in Europe, takes you safely across the river. Right next to the bridge, you can marvel at a lavishly restored water mill, which is still used today to produce flour and baking meal. At the weekend, you can see for yourself in the mill shop opposite and try the home-baked bread with a beer from the village brewery. Before you can enjoy the Weimar UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will pass the extensive landscaped park on the Ilm. This takes you past the Deutsche Bienenmuseum, where you can learn lots of interesting facts about the busy bee colony and should definitely try the delicious and typical bee sting. From there, it is not far to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s famous garden house, his most important retreat and creative centre. You will spend the night in Weimar.
On a discovery tour (individual): Today it’s either: off to the German Classical period, with the four stars Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland. The city offers a wealth of evidence of German and European history in a very small area. Numerous museums, parks and historical buildings invite visitors interested in culture to discover them. The sites of Weimar Classicism, including Goethe’s and Schiller’s residence and the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And if you would like to explore the city of Weimar as it was in Goethe’s time, it is best to take one of the historic carriages. Or you can follow in the footsteps of the painter Lyonel Feininger. The famous artist was one of the first masters at the Bauhaus. In his free time, he enjoyed exploring the Weimarer Land on his beloved bicycle and filled his sketchpads with his famous village and church motifs. The circular cycle tour (approx. 27 km) on the “Feininger-Radweg” takes you through the charmingly situated villages in the “Mittleres Ilmtal” landscape conservation area in Weimarer Land and presents some of Feininger’s favourite motifs. Glass information panels allow you to directly compare the paintings with the original buildings.
Sustainable accommodation at Auerstedt Castle: The route beyond the city limits of Weimar takes you directly to the favourite haunts of Weimar court society. Impressive palaces and magnificent parks tell stories from the time of Duchess Anna Amalia and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. You reach the Wielandgut Oßmannstedt via Schlosspark Tiefurt. The predominantly tarmac Ilmtal-Radweg meanders along the Ilm, past flower meadows and fields through the gently undulating landscape of the Weimarer Land. We recommend taking a break at the historic Eberstedt oil mill with its floating huts, petting zoo, mill tavern and an original Zuppingen water wheel. Today’s stage destination Auerstedt is part of the spa and wine town of Bad Sulza. You will no doubt know Auerstedt from the history books and stories about Napoleon’s double battle in 1806. The former Prussian headquarters is now a modern and stylishly furnished hotel resort and is a real insider tip. In keeping with the extensive, green surroundings, the Hotel Resort Schloss Auerstedt has been awarded the Green Sign Label Level 4. Look forward to a relaxing and regenerating end to your cycle tour on the Ilmtal-Radweg.
Sustainable wellness enjoyment: Discover the spa and wine town of Bad Sulza. The modern tourist information centre is located at the entrance to the spa gardens. While you browse through the leisure tips there, you can sample the regional wine. Brine and wine characterise the town. Treat yourself to a little break and experience everything that strengthens body, mind and well-being. Take a healthy sip of brine in the drinking hall in the spa gardens or stroll through the “Louise” graduation house and breathe in the sea breeze. Recover from the last few days in the saddle at the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza. Here you can relax in the body-warm brine water or in the spacious sauna area. Enjoy the underwater sounds of the award-winning Liquid Sound®, a unique and lasting sound experience above and below the water. And in the truest sense of the word, because Toskana Therme Bad Sulza has been awarded the Green Sign Spa – Level 3 label.
The crowning finale (approx. 52 km): Today you can enjoy the last section of the Ilmtal-Radweg to the confluence with the Saale. Follow the Ilmtal-Radweg through the Thüringer Weintor in Bad Sulza and cycle along the idyllic vineyards via Großheringen to the end of the Ilmtal-Radweg in the wine village of Kaatschen. Here the Ilm flows into the Saale. The first wineries, such as the Zahn family winery, show you the way. You not only join the Saale-Radweg, but also the Saale-Unstrut wine region. The well-maintained cycle path leads along cosy wineries, where there is always an opportunity to stop for a bite to eat, all the way to the cathedral city of Naumburg. Naumburg Cathedral is one of the most important cultural monuments of the High Middle Ages and a UNSECO World Heritage Site. If you don’t want to cycle the way back, you can use the direct Deutsche Bahn train connection from Naumburg in the direction of Apolda and Weimar back to Bad Sulza.
Individual departure from Eberstedt or extension: An eventful cycle tour comes to an end. Before you set off on your journey home, enjoy one last hearty breakfast and perhaps take a leisurely stroll in the surrounding area, for example to the nearby “Auerworldpalast”, an impressive, hybrid work of natural art. The structure of the willow palace is modelled on the oldest building methods of mankind and is reminiscent of a botanical mandala, which gives the Auerworldpalast its meditative power.
If you would like to return to your vehicle at the starting point, we recommend using the good train connections or the offer for an individual transfer.
Arrival Thüringer Wald: Start your cycle tour in Ilmenau, one of Goethe’s favourite places and a flourishing university town. The former spa town and Goethe’s oasis of well-being lies at the foot of the 861 metre high Kickelhahn and is the cradle of top international athletes and a creative forge for world-renowned technical achievements. Ilmenau’s many facets are almost limitless. Add to this the charm of rustic forests with spring streams and mountain meadows all around. Feel welcome in charming Ilmenau. Our tip: get to know the town on a leisurely stroll, for example. The perfect tour guide is available via QR code on your smartphone. You are staying overnight in Ilmenau.
