Blankenhain – the Linden City

Between the Schwarza Valley and the City of Light Jena

The linden trees are the symbol for peace, loyalty and freedom

The town’s many lime trees have been the town’s trademark since Blankenhain was first mentioned in a document in 1252. Blankenhain Castle, in its new guise, provides a venue for events in the centre of the small town and a place for fairy tales and stories that people like to tell here.

In the Middle Ages, Blankenhain was a well-fortified town with a wall, moat, rampart and a dense hedge. Nine ponds secured the 4 to 5 m high walls. The last contemporary witness of these massive constructions is the small “duck pond”, which is said to have once run through the entire park area of the “Carl-Alexander-Platz”.

River landscapes in the middle of Thuringia

The Ilm and Saale rivers shape the landscape around the city, lined with dense and picturesque forests. A whole series of special Thuringian hiking trails run here. One of these is the Goethe Experience Trail, which follows the traces of love straight to Saalfeld-Rudolstadt to Kochberg Castle, the home of Charlotte von Stein. Every year on the first weekend in May, the Goethe Hike takes place. This is a good occasion to be out and about with many hikers and, of course, with J. W. Goethe himself. Those who prefer a quieter pace can also opt for the Beer and Castle Road or the Thuringian Porcelain Road, which run through Blankenhain.

Golf, Health and Spa

This is exactly where you need to be if you want to stay healthy and enjoy playing or learning to play golf. The GolfResort Weimarer Land on the outskirts of the city with its 36-hole golf course is stylishly embedded in the natural surroundings and a place of excellence. A family hotel with extensive spa and health facilities surrounds the golf course. The insider tip: Plan breakfast here, with a great ambience and a view over a little piece of paradise.
