Bad Sulza – Die Spa- and wine town

In the middle of the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region

The brine and the wine shape the face of Bad Sulza

Picturesquely situated on the banks of the Ilm in the triangle of towns Weimar, Jena and Naumburg, the spa and wine town of Bad Sulza has a special flair. The river valleys of the Ilm and Saale run through gentle hills and offer a dreamlike unobstructed view of sunny wine terraces. The healing springs in the spa park are a guarantee for the health and well-being of the people who spend their cure, enjoy their holiday or live here. The Ilmtal cycle path also leads through Bad Sulza and the spa park.

Knowledge is power

To understand the interrelationships between culture, nature and the people of the region that have developed over the past two centuries, you should plan an exploratory tour on the “Brine and Salt” theme trail. After all, Bad Sulza’s brine springs are the origin of its designation as a brine spa.

The entire spa park is a listed building and therefore our passion. The music pavilion from 1873, the historic inhalatorium from 1903 and the drinking hall from 1910 are lovingly maintained and opened to visitors. The unmistakable character of the park, however, goes back to the extensive saltworks, which are to be explored and restored piece by piece in the coming years.

Salt production as the lifeline of the spa town

A large part of the facilities has been brought back to life. The “Louise” graduation house and the inhalatorium have been given a new look, and the next step will be to modernise the Darnstedt brine drilling towers.

And if you want to know exactly what it’s all about, sign up for a guided tour of the Saline and Local History Museum to gain an insight into the history of salt production, which goes back long before the 15th century.

Wine and Dionisios – the spirits of the city

Wine has been grown in Bad Sulza and the surrounding area for over 800 years. The soil is fertile, chalky and the hills catch the sun. The Saale-Unstrut region is the northernmost quality wine-growing area in Germany. A wine that is famous far beyond the borders of Thuringia. The traditional starting point of the Saale-Unstrut Wine Route is the Thuringian Wine Gate in the spa gardens of Bad Sulza.

Thuringian Wine Festival

Always on the third weekend in August, the Thuringian Wine Festival is celebrated annually, an integral part of the grape harvest. A highlight of the festivities is the crowning of the Bad Sulza Wine Queen. She is on the road for a year as an ambassador for the region’s wine, far beyond the state’s borders.

The wine trail

The wine trail through the town and the surrounding area is an educational and nature trail. A footbath in the Kneipp pool, in the immediate vicinity of the Bad Sulza tourist information office, offers a welcome cool-down in between.

Aquaculture in Bad Sulza

Past the Goethe Garden House II in the park of the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza, it is a treat to linger in the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza. The ©Liquide Sound is the highlight of soul bathing. You float between light, water and sound, which is specially composed and lets the guests arrive at themselves.
